First Batch of Backings

Backdrop Project Begins

I am beginning a multi-part research project (and eventual film) that will draw upon a collection of historic backdrops or backings from MGM and early television. These backings were painted at the height of the studio system, during the high-renaissance of hollywood scenic art. I have taken custody of 12 backings as part of the Art Directors Guild Backdrop Recovery Project. The ADG project has rescued over 200 drops from JC Backings/MGM collection and approximately 40 drops from Scenic Express. Due to Covid-19, it will take some time to inventory, document and begin research on the backings. I am also looking forward to incorporating the backings and my research into my teaching.
