The Maids
by Jean Genet

For this double-production of The Maids directed by Bryan Jackson, the play was performed back-to-back with two differently gendered casts. Each cast performed on the same set but with different stagings and cuttings of the text. The two performances together created a full performance of the play. Key narrative moments overlapped and ceremonial pieces of wardrobe and props were repeated for emphasis. The doubling highlighted how gender expression and sexuality amplify different resonances in the play and examined how the audience reacted to intimacy between characters.
